The Right Location
Location, location, location… yes indeed, it is important,
but a good location also comes with a good sized price tag
attached. Ask yourself, "How many caskets do I have to
sell each month to pay the rent?" Remember, caskets
are not an impulse item such a jewelry or clothing. The world
won't be stampeding through your door to snap up bargain priced
caskets. Whether it is preneed, near need or at the time of
loss, most retail casket customers are best typified as victims
of today's commercialized funeral process. Because of a deep
motivation to avoid being taken advantage of again, this core
client base is more inclined to spend time and energy sourcing
out other alternatives.
It is recommended that when selecting a location for a retail
casket sales center that you follow several guidelines.
Store Site Selection Guidelines
- The size of the space should range between 800-1,200 square
feet. Suggested rent expenditure should be capped at $1,500.00
per month or less.
- Ground floor location is a necessity.
- Parking and proximity to public transportation are important
considerations.
- Ideally, a secondary strip mall is desirable. If possible,
look for space next to a business with a large traffic flow,
such as a post office, restaurant, convenience store or
hair salon. The more traffic, the better your visibility.
- Avoid renting space that require extensive buildouts.
- Avoid signing long-term leases. In a few years, it might
be necessary to expand into a larger space.
- Large windows in the front of your business give you the
opportunity to create displays of your merchandise.
- An open concept layout lends itself best. Avoid cut-up
spaces.
- Signage is important. Make certain that there are adequate
areas for your signs, either on the building or in the front.
